Tyntesfield built by the Gibbs family is a Victorian estate near Wraxall, North Somerset seven miles from Bristol and a stones throw from the Battleaxes which also was built by the Gibbs family.
This remarkable Victorian country house and estate is situated on a ridge overlooking the beautiful Vale of Nailsea, only seven miles from Bristol. William Gibbs bought Tyntes Place the original, Regency-Gothic house on the site in 1843. But it was not until 1863 that he began to rebuild it into a full-blooded Gothic-Revival extravaganza, richly decorated with naturalistic stone carving.
It was acquired by the National Trust in June 2002 after a fund raising campaign to keep it open to the public and it was visited by over 100 thousand people in 2009 alone.
The house is built of Bath stone and it was made a Grade II listed building in 1973 and has since been upgraded to Grade I. Principal rooms include the library, drawing room, billiard room, dining room and chapel. The beautiful kitchen garden include glasshouses and frames, a large classical orangery and quarters for the gardeners. The orangery has been designated as a Grade II listed building and is included in the Buildings at Risk Register produced by English Heritage.
Tyntesfield’s house makes for an inspiring day of fresh air and discovery. This year Tyntesfield’s new Home Farm visitor centre is open for the first time too with a restaurant, shop, exhibition space and family play area.
So what better way to finish off a wonderful time spent enjoying the beautiful house and gardens at Tyntesfield than to pop along to The Battleaxes for a bite to eat or a glass of something refreshing.
